EMDR works very well within a hypnotherapy practice. Originally designed to help address traumatic memories, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) facilitates the accessing, processing and resolving of disturbing memories and unpleasant life experiences, whilst addressing negative beliefs and unwanted body sensations about past and future events and promoting supportive positive beliefs. EMDR is a highly useful tool for any professional hypnotherapist. EMDR is commonly applied to working with trauma, disturbance, anxiety (past, present, future events), phobias, performance concerns.
Example: Say you get hit by another car whilst crossing a junction. No major injuries, just some bruises, which will heal over the next few weeks until you cannot even see where they were. Your brain 'heals' in the same way. You may be upset initially, and then talk to friends and colleagues about the event, and without even thinking about it, learn any lessons, file away useful information, and process any relevant emotions or sensations. This way, when you look back at the event a few months or years later, it is just remembered as an unpleasant experience.
For some, they are not able to process the experience (fully or at all), and it may continue to intrude in everyday life. For example, there may be negative beliefs such as "I am powerless", or "I cannot trust anyone", there may be body sensations, such as feelings of tension, or a heightened emotion, such as anxiety. This may have unwanted intrusions into a person's life, such as when approaching a road junction, a person may go into a state of fight/flight and be aware of a heightened state of anxiety, yet also less able to focus on their driving.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Course short course
EMDR is a powerful psychological treatment method, it aims to resolve the emotional impact of traumatic events and treats anxiety based problems caused by trauma. The theory behind EMDR is that many psychological difficulties are the result of distressing life experiences which have not been stored in the memory properly and are said to not be processed. EMDR helps these memories to become processed.
